The Sunday Market

After what felt like the longest afternoon spent battling a sudden downpour from above post-Cooking Up A Tribute at Sculpture Square (thanks @foodiefolks for the tickets!) with a zonked out boyfriend that just booked out, Le and I finally made it back to his place in one piece - although partially soulless.

Thankfully, dinner was spent about a 15-minute walk away and it definitely didn't disappoint!

Tucked away in an inconspicuous corner of Upper Serangoon Road, Sunday Market is a hidden little gem of a cafe I'd take my chance at, time after time. I really question it's 54%, 3-star reviews on HungryGoWhere because I utterly enjoyed my evening there.

Upon entering the cafe, I was pleasantly welcomed by a staff that kindly helped us with the door, followed by a well-disorganised space furnished with colourfully padded chairs and retro paintings hung on grungy, rough, brick walls - a huge contrast against its seemingly Japanese-styled outward appearance. I was instantaneously drawn to how cosy this place felt and dropped myself a mental note to have some desserts just so I can enjoy it a little longer. Although it was a Saturday night, the cafe was strangely empty and quiet.

Just like how this place looks, the menu was also a fusion of many things - blending Asian delicacies with that of the Western - spotting Tom Yam Pasta, Ren Dang Lagsania, Chilli Crab Penne, and many other unique dishes.
.
We got ourselves a Green Thai Milk Tea Frappe ($6), Ren Dang! Lagsania ($16) and Sir-Duck-Tive ($18).

Thai Green Tea in itself has always been, for me, the best creation ever so undoubtedly, I loved this.

Sir-duck-tive, on the otherhand, was disappointingly run-of-the-mill. Savuer's Duck Confit would kill this, hands down.

Lastly, for my most anticipated dish, the Ren Dang! Lagsania was deeeelicious. They were very generous and I could most definitely feel the beef chunks in every bite. Topped off with some greens, this dish was made less satiating. Thumbs up!

For desserts, I got myself a single scoop of Hazelnut (sorry I forgot the full name!) ice cream on a waffle. The waffle was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, exactly what is needed in a perfect waffle. I just wished the outside was a little more crispy. Nevertheless, it was still good.

By the time we were indulging in our waffle, the cafe started filling up with families and I figured that maybe this was more of a family place because of the carpark right outside the cafe. I was also surprised at how they actually went around asking the customers if they drove here after hearing that the summon auntie was spotted nearby. I must say, they have really good service here.

Overall, I'd rate this place a 8/10 partially because i'm extremely anal about good service and because the food was good enough. A little heads up tho, I have read that their menu items are somewhat of a hit and miss so I might've gotten lucky with my choices.

xx
